The organizers of the Ghana Junior Olympics, a flagship youth athletics program created by the Legon Creative Athletics Club (LCAC) to nurture sporting talent from an early age, are appealing urgently for sponsorship ahead of this year’s event. Despite its remarkable success over the past three editions, the competition remains without corporate support. The 2026 edition is scheduled for January 3, 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The initiative, founded by Coach Elorm Amenakpor and Ghana’s sprint star and Olympian Benjamin Azamati, has grown rapidly since its inception. The maiden edition at the Paa Joe Stadium, KNUST, drew 300 young athletes from across the country. The second edition at the Baba Yara Stadium attracted over 800 participants. The most successful yet was the third edition, held at the University of Ghana Stadium, where about 1,200 young athletes showcased their talents.
However, despite this impressive growth and impact, organizers say the future of this year’s event hangs in the balance due to the lack of sponsorship. In previous years, the competition was largely funded by Coach Elorm, Benjamin Azamati, athletes coached by Coach Elorm and contributions from past athletes, support that organizers say is no longer sustainable given the increasing size and financial requirements of the event.
Speaking to the Daily, the Managing Director of LCAC, Coach Elorm, expressed deep concern about the struggle to secure funding.
“We have written to many companies and followed up several times, but none has shown interest. It is quite unfortunate,” he said. “This event has created unforgettable moments for these kids. They look forward to it every year. They’re older by a year after last year’s event and eager to compete with athletes they already know as well as new challengers. That’s the spirit of sports. That’s how young athletes build confidence.”
He appealed to individuals, institutions, and corporate bodies to come to their aid, saying the event has become an essential platform for identifying and developing Ghana’s next generation of sporting stars.
“We pray for support soon,” he added.
The 4th edition of the Ghana Junior Olympics is set for January 3, 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium, and the general public is invited to attend and support the nation’s future champions
